Are all degrees available through the VAE?
Yes, with the exception of the following certifications:
- General diplomas (e.g., general high school diploma)
- DAEU-B
- Certifications
- Certain degrees leading to regulated professions or meeting certain essential safety standards
- Any certification not registered withthe RNCP(Article L6411-1 ofthe Labor Code)
The University of Montpellier awards only its own degrees.
Who is eligible to apply for recognition of prior learning and experience?
According to the law, anyonewith one year of experiencerelated to the degree being sought.
It should be noted that for bachelor’s and master’s degrees, one year of experience may not be sufficient.
Do I have to take the classes?
No. Youwill present your Portfolio II to a panel of judges: it reflects your experience and, above all, your skills as they relate to the degree.
How does academic support work at the University of Montpellier?
The support program at the University of Montpellier consists of five stages, as defined by the national support charter:
- One-on-one interview and career assessment
- Connection between the framework and the candidate's background

Any experience gained abroad may be taken into account if you provide supporting documentation, translated into French by a certified translator.

Applicants musthave at least one year of experience (1,607 hours, full-time equivalent)related to the degree they are seeking.
The activities may have been carried out on a continuous or intermittent basis, full-time or part-time, and may or may not have been paid (volunteer work, union activities, etc.).

Do I need to notify my employer about my VAE process?
You are not required to notify your employer, unless you want to involve them in your funding or you wish to request leave for a work-study program.
How do I prepare for my VAE? Do I need to request time off from my employer?
If you wish to pursue a VAE process on your own initiative, you are entitled to24 hoursof VAE leave(CVAE), which may be taken consecutively or not.
This leave allows you to take time off from work either to take the validation exams or to receive support in preparing for them.
There is no minimum length of service requirement, whether you are on a fixed-term or permanent contract.
You must submit arequest for leave of absenceto your employer (via a letter with return receipt requested) along with the document confirming the eligibility of your application. Your employer has 30 days to respond; failure to respond within this period constitutes approval.
Can an employer refuse a VAE leave request?
No, but he can provide reasons for postponing your leave for six months from the date of your request. He has 30 days to respond to your leave request.
How long does a VAE take?
A VAE typically lasts 12 months:
- It depends on when you start your VAE in relation to the jury session date (April or November)
- It also depends on whether you can make time for it

Can you submit multiple applications for a VAE?

How does the thesis defense process work at the University of Montpellier?
You will be auditioning duringone of the two annual sessions(April or November). Auditions are typically held in person, although remote options are available to accommodate all applicants.
After the participants were introduced and the rules of the VAE were reviewed, the hearing began:
- You will present your Book II in 20 minutes using a digital presentation
- Followed by a 20-minute Q&A session
- The deliberation concludes the hearing
The jury's response is immediate.
The jury has the final say and will inform you whether your degree is fully approved, partially approved (see the question on this topic), or denied.
What happens if I don't complete the degree?
The jury has the final say:it may award you theentiredegree or only aportionof it.
In that case, there are two possibilities:
1.If the committee determines that you need to complete part of the program to round out your skills, you will enroll as a continuing education student to take the courses the committee specifies.
Upon completion of these courses and based on your grades, you will either earn the degree or not.
2.Alternatively, the committee may determine that your presentation is insufficient in certain areas and may ask you to write a supplementary paper on a specific topic. After reviewing your paper, the committee will decide whether your supplementary work is sufficient to grant the degree in full.
