Let’s rethink video game project management!
The video game industry is plagued by numerous stereotypes: a lack of gender diversity, ethical issues, and sometimes questionable pay and working conditions.
To address this issue, the Montpellier-Sète University Institute of Technology is launching a new program in partnership with the University of Montpellier’s Continuing Education Department: the University Diploma in Responsible Video Game Project Management.
This training course is eligible for CPF (My Training Account) funding

A necessary training program that addresses a well-documented issue
As part of the France 2030 Future Investments Program, the Assessment of the Video Game Industry in France—led by the Push Start association and administered by the Caisse des Dépôts—indicated in May 2023 a need for public training, particularly in the area of management.
Beyond this observation, this new university degree also addresses a clearly identified issue: the video game industry must rethink the management of video game projects, which can be plagued by numerous stereotypes, including a lack of gender diversity, ethical issues, and sometimes questionable salary and social practices.
The widespread practice of cost-cutting in this sector is a prime example of this.

The crunch refers to a intense period of work that precedes the completion of a project and is characterized by extremely intense workdays during which employees are under constant heavy pressure.
The objectives of the training are clear:
- To offer a reflective and critical approach to video games
- Enhancing the skills of professionals in the video game industry
- Offer opportunities for career advancement into leadership roles(video game producer, video game project manager, lead artist or technical programmer, production director, business owner, etc.).
Strong values as a foundation
Antoine Chollet, a faculty member in the Computer Science Departmentat the Montpellier-Sète University Institute of Technology and the academic director of this program, emphasizes his commitment to advancing the video game industry by developing a program built on the values of inclusivity, diversity, and ethics.
The curriculum of this program will thus enable students to acquire a range of skills, including the design of video games using a reflective, artistic, and ethical approach; inclusive team management to create accessible and innovative video games; and the production of video games in an ethical, engaging, and sustainable manner.
A degree for professionals
Available throughout France via a fully online format, this new university diploma is designed for professionals who have a foundation in management or technical expertise (such as developers, graphic designers, VR (Virtual Reality) specialists, animators, etc.) but lack managerial skills.
In other words, this degree program enables learners to develop their skills through a comprehensive curriculum designed for professionals, with a study schedule that allows them to continue working while pursuing their education.
